We had lost a few straight-laced friends and associates just by telling them about the subject of our new project and we quickly decided to keep things as quiet as possible. Nevertheless, word started getting out amongst the Czech underground and people started contacting us with offers/requests to participate in the film. These offers/requests were accepted/granted and most of the people you see in the film were absolute strangers to us before the production began.
"Casting" consisted of discussing the theme in question and letting each person react with his or her own ideas, experiences, etc. Little by little We’d get an idea of what to expect from their scene and how to properly prepare. We never asked anyone how much of their story was authentic and how much was poetry, and we still don’t know to this day. Nor does it really interest us since for the purpose of this film it’s sufficient that their scenes feel convincing and interesting. (The truth is that even if we had asked them we could never have been sure of their honesty…)
